Stop-Motion Character Animation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsVsR2WEGaU&feature=youtu.be

I basically used two of my desk decorations as my characters and I filmed them frame by frame moving toward each other. As they met they battled ferociously. At first the Thing was coming on top but in the end Doctor Doom had the last laugh. The Thing was simply no match for him on his own without the Fantastic 4. I filmed them edited the clips together in my adobe premiere pro. I also sped up the duration for each clip so it looks more realistic. Hope this was better than the actual fantastic 4 film that came out recently.

Science Fact or Cinematic Fiction

Science Facts or Cinematic Fiction?

In this paper I would like to address a very important principle that a lot of movies, animated films and video games neglect to add. That principle is gravitational force in the law of physics. Often times they would leave out gravity on certain motions or objects that are humanly impossible to do unless you are trained as a yoga master or the world's strongest man alive. Just because the character grunts and exerts all his force towards that object or perform a stunt that looks really cool doesn't mean he or she would actually be able to move or pull it off. Gravity is the force that weights on you so you don't float into space or just simply fly around the earth. Gravity controls a lot of elements around our Earth. Like Newton's third law, "Whatever goes up must come down" because of gravity. Unless you're an airplane or an elevator. Then you are defying gravity to the maximum. Of course Gravity doesn't apply in space either until you move towards the earth's atmosphere. There are three different types of films and video games I would like to address that completely defies gravity, the first would Matrix, where Neo dodges bullet. Second would be Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner. I am absolutely in love with this cartoon when I was younger. This animated cartoon is the father of all physics destroyers. Last film would be a video game called Resident Evil 5, it involves the main character bunching a boulder. It's quite hilarious. All these films forget to apply gravity into their films, which is somewhat funnier at times.

In the film Matrix, Neo was being chased by all kinds of bad men known as the agent smiths. He ended up on the rooftop and have nowhere to go. The agents pointed the gun at him and fired While the bullets are going toward him he arches his back in a 90 degree angle while feet planted on the ground to dodge those bullets. Is it possible you ask me? No it is not possible to have your body in a 90 degree angle while dodging the bullets. Your center of gravity standing up is around your chest. Gravity would still be on around your chest but the amount of gravitational force apply to it as well and your weight will cause you to fall back or break something. Not to mention your legs won't be able to hold you up like that, its humanly impossible to do and you will wobble and fall. Unless of course you are a limbo champion and have years and years of training to form your back and gravity to support you up. In the end Neo did fall but it's because bullets have gravity apply to them too so as it falls it grazed his leg and cause him to fall. They sure didn't forget about applying gravity to bullets huh. I also didn't particularly like when they are doing combat and he kicks someone and he goes flying up and hits the wall. That's not possible with gravity and law of physics. Sure he might fly backwards but he won't go ascending up and then hit the wall.

I am sure you have seen this famous cartoon called Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner. Its every 90s kids favorite law breaking cartoon animation by Warner bros. In this cartoon, it breaks so much law of physics it's almost impossible to remember and count them all on the top of my head. But I remember Coyote trying to use a tub of water and a sail then use a fan to make him go forward. Coyote strapping himself with a rocket and trying to shoot himself forward, with gravity he would most likely get grazed up against the floor while moving forward. The most famous one is when he goes off a cliff and he hovers there for a few seconds then he tries to touch the ground but it's not there. He looks down and looks at the audience and then he falls. Whenever I watch those moments I can't help but laugh and watch him fall down. I wanted to try doing that but knowing the law of gravity, you won't be able to even wait a second and you are already falling down to your doom. I read somewhere someone wanted to do the bridge jump when there is a gap in between but sadly even with so much acceleration his car went down the river bank.

My third and final animation that defies the principle of gravity is from a video game called Resident Evil 5. In this game, the main character Chris is attempting to move a boulder forward so he can get across to the other side and save his partner from falling into the lava. So with all his might he push and push and he ends up being able to push the boulder by punching it several times. Normally in a real life situation its physically impossible for someone to push a 5 ton boulder and make it move forward, let alone punching it. The force planted on your feet with gravity is the same as you exerting the force onto the boulder, which still wouldn't be possible to move it.  When you punch it you are only exerting temporary force and its like a blow of force for a few second that it. Keep on pushing it would be more wise and healthier for your knuckles. Also the way the boulder bounces into the lava is just unreal its like gravity doesn't apply to it at all. The boulder looks like it was made out of rubber. This is similar to the Kung Fu Hustle movie when the woman pushes a car sideways to park it. Normally you won't be able to do that in real life because first the car is heavy with gravity and second the woman was just giving it a one two push to slide it into place. It's not possible in any sort of way. Regardless of how buff and strong Chris is, its not possible to move that boulder out of his way. Even Brian Shaw the world's strongest man can't punch a boulder to make it move, or can he? He's done some crazy world breaking record things. So I wouldn't doubt him to try it, but he's not a normal human.

Overall all these three films, cartoon and video game shows that a lot of developers and film creators don't remember there is something called realism and the principle of gravity. But in their defense I understand why they choose not to put gravity into consideration to make the movie more interesting. Its suppose to defy gravity to make the audience more interested and like it. People love unreality situations and it grasps their attention, if everything is base on physics and reality in movies, video games and cartoons then it will be very boring and lots of people will die in movies. While we are on the topic of gravity,  I also want to point out the movie gravity with Sandra Bullock, there are a lot of things that are not right. When they go from one place to another and then meet back together so quickly. According to actually NASA professionals its not that quick and it takes some time to go from point A to point B. Also china's space station is not next to ours, so she would of been dead long ago. Just some food for thoughts facts. All in all,  Gravity is bringing us down!

Outline for the Second Term Paper

Term Paper #2 Outline:

1. Introduction of the 3 Movie/Video Game 3 scenes.

Thesis statement: These 3 movie scenes defies the law of physics in order to allow the hero survive without a scratch.

2.  First Film - Matrix

A. Neo's back arch dodge against bullets

         a. His back would break in matters of minutes because of gravity and how he bend it.

         b. Timing of the bullet would of hit him before he even arch back

         c. He should of fallen and there is no way he can arch like that without hurting and straining his legs and back and fall down.

3. Second Film  - Indiana Jones

A. Boulder away from Boulder.

         a. Can you really run away from a boulder without getting crush?

         b. the speed of a rolling ball is much faster than you if you are running in a straight line

         c. Not to mention he dived out of the cave, he should have a few broken bones here and there.

4. Video Game - Resident Evil 5

A. Boulder punching scene to make it move and go forward

         a. It's impossible for someone to exert force by punching something repeatedly to make it move. especially if its 2 ton the weight.

         b. It would be better and make more sense if he pushes it harder and harder with force rather than punching it

         c. Gravity is much heavier on heavier objects such as boulders so it would take more than just one big muscled man to push or punch it to move it.

5. Conclusion on the 3 scenes and rephrase on why these 3 scenes are physically impossible to do with the law of physics.

Stop Motion Animation of Falling

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzQeRpO8WNM&feature=youtu.be

I just thought that showing a ball falling to the ground would be boring, so I decided to use coins instead. I spin them and each of them takes a duration of seconds to fall flat. I just like the idea of coins spinning then they reach to a certain point in physics and it slows down and falls. Its interesting to me but it might be very boring to a lot. That's pretty much how I got the idea for this assignment.

The Laws of Physics in an Animation Universe

Laws of Physics in The Incredible

In this animated universe, there are lots of unique characters that has the abilities to defy the law of physics in order to save their world. They are a family of heroes that ended up having to fight a kid who grew up to became a nasty villain because the main hero Mr. Incredible didn't recognize him as his side kick. There is Mr. Incredible, able to lift anything 10x heavier than himself, there is Mrs. Incredible who is pretty much an elastic woman. She can stretch herself as far as she wants. Their son Dash who is a speedster, can run faster than any bullet train and travel to another country and back before you can even say Mississippi. The daughter violet can hold together a force field to protect herself or just use it to travel around like a hamster ball. Last but not least their baby boy Jack Jack. He doesn't really show any crazy abilities until the end of the movie, which he combust into a human torch. That's The Incredible family.

They have a family friend named Frozone. He shoots ice out of his body and can freeze anything he wants. The villain Syndrome doesn't have powers so he created an anti gravity bracer so he can lift and hold anything in the air with a single point. Due to the fact he also can't fly he made jet boots to wear so he can fly around.  This is the cast of the Incredible and I want to get into the Physics of each of these characters and dissect on why its practical or impractical to this universe. The Incredible Universe has people that can defies the law of physics in our world.

The Law of Physics works very differently when it comes to super powered heroes. Mr. Incredible is able has super strength that most normal human do not have. Normal human cannot do lat pulls on 2 freight trains that probably weights around 130ton, or he can hold a car above their head like it's made out of rubber. Physics does not apply to this man. He can also jump from a 40 floor building to catch someone in mid air, going through a window and end up without a scratch. The funny thing is the guy he saved end up suing him because he got hurt.  Oh the irony, that's why sometimes I am not sure if I should move or help someone when they are hurt. They could blame it on you and sue you. He also has a body that can withstand electricity like no one can. He still gets shock and hurt but he absorbs them like a sponge.

Mrs. Incredible can stretch herself as long as she wants which is very amusing because that makes you into a rubber man/woman. She can turn into a parachute to slowly descend to the ground at least there is gravity applied there. Last I remember Elastic or rubber if dropped from a high altitude do not expand and will just fall with gravity straight to the ground. So I am kind of antsy about her powers. Is she really Elastic woman or is she a parachute cloth woman. But you can't stretch cloth it will tear. Her ability is very questionable. She even turn into a boat going 80 m/h, if a normal person goes even faster than 50 they probably can be crowned king of the sea. But in reality they body will be shredded and not in a good way. Water has inertia so it would tear their flesh off from him if they are going that fast. The resistance of water is very great.

Dash their speedster son, runs faster than the speed of light and can also run on water. He can outrun any bullet train or even a bullet itself. its pretty intense I really like his ability because speed can do a lot in the Physics world. Speed can cause electromagnetic charges, it can cause wind, it can let you travel between time if you run faster than the speed of light. Its just a very helpful power to have. Not to mention transportation wise you are set. Violet their daughter have an ability that can create a force field which is pretty cool too. Combining with dash's speed, they run together causing the force field to move forward like a hamster on a hamster wheel. Its great exercise. She can also make it bigger too, I guess you can say she is a impenetrable wall. She can even block bullets and laser that is the speed of light. She is able to shield her family from a an explosion. Normally it would blast them away with physics but her shield is so strong it stays in place.

Frozone can freeze bullets with ice an its pretty nuts because he can also freeze any liquid even spit. In order for a human to freeze liquid their body would have to be way below absolute zero to cause any liquid they touch to also freeze. He shoots out ice and makes a make shift bridge out of it which is pretty neat. He slides around on it to travel around. With Law and Physics if applied to this man, he would be dead and its impossible for someone to be freezing a bullet that is traveling at a high velocity. The also goes with Mr. and Mrs. Incredible youngest son Jack Jack. At the end of the movie we learn that he can turn himself into as heavy as metal or even harder. Then he can combust his body to flame on. Not to mention he can also become a monster. This little kid has so much powers its crazy. The becoming metal part there is no way the villain could of held on to him while he turned into metal because his initial force of holding him wasn't the same as the one when he turned to metal.

Last but not least there is the villain Syndrome. Because he is an ordinary human. He has no power even though he wants to be a superhero. So he turned into a villain pretending to save the world by creating robots to attack them and faking to save them. He wanted to defy the law of physics so much he made himself a anti gravity bracer where he can hold and freeze anything with a point of his fingers and lift it up as it weights nothing. He also have jet boots to fly. I feel bad for him but he shouldn't try so hard.

Overall I really enjoy this movie, when I was a kid I dreamed of having super power and this Pixar movie made me so happy. The laws of physics on it is a little wacky but I don't mind that one bit. It showed me that just because you are an ordinary man, that doesn't mean you can't be a hero. You just can't turn yourself into a villain and try so hard to please people.

I sort of deviated from the outline because I believe there is more to talk about with the Laws of Physics in this movie with these characters. The environment and other stuff doesn't really have much of an impact for me to talk about. In the end the characters are whats the main point for the law of physics in this universe.

By Students from Kingston University London

Hi my name is Dexter and I am a full time student at SJSU, This is my final semester before graduation. I am very excited to be graduating and going into the real world, hopefully I will find a job that is close to what I want to do.  I studied in different majors. I switched major 3 times throughout the years. My first major was computer engineering, I didn't think it was what i wanted to do working with hardware and programming them. Then I switched to computer science, it was interesting but it wasn't what I was looking for either. Then I asked myself is it that I don't like to program stuff. It hit me and I have always wanted to work with camera, directing, producing and acting. So I ended up in Radio Television and Films major. I enjoy it a lot ever since i switched. My main goal after school is to pursuit acting, if that doesn't work out I don't mind working behind the scenes too like camera work lighting set design and all that. I would even love direct and produce or even come up with ideas on a movie. Someday I will reach my goal and do everything on my bucket list. Thanks for listening!

The First Post

Hello,

I am Dexter and this is my first assignment for PHYS 123!
